Car key types

Today, there are three kinds of car keys. Non-security car keys (regular car keys) can be copied at most hardware stores.  However, most cars are now using one of two kinds of electronic security car keys that must be duplicated by a car dealer, or less expensively by a locksmith who has the necessary equipment and training to program the keys, like A to Z Jacksonville Locksmith.

VATS key

VATS keys are exclusive to General Motors cars. VATS keys have a resistor chip in the shank of the car key that tells the car the key is right for the vehicle.

TransponderTransponder key keys are in most new cars and have an electronic chip programmed with one of millions of security codes. The key sends a signal to the car to tell it is OK to start. Some transponder keys even open your car by radio signal without you removing the transmitter from your pocket or purse and you start the car by pressing a push button, without the key.

Replace car transponder key. Transponder keys are now used instead of regular car keys in 4 of the 5 the top selling cars, and today a majority of cars use transponder keys. A transponder chip is embedded in the head of the key and contains one of a trillion possible electronic codes. This transponder sends a signal to an antenna in the steering column when you put your transponder key into the car ignition switch. Only if the transponder key signal is recognized by the car computer will the car start. Transponder keys can only be made by your car dealer, and less expensively by A to Z Jacksonville Locksmith who can make a car transponder key for 90% of cars. A few car models require you to go to the car dealer.

Replace car VATS key. VATS keys are exclusive to General Motors cars and are different than transponder keys. VATS keys have a resistor chip in the shank of the car key, but there are only about 15 different resistor values making them less secure than transponder keys.
